28 may 2013 1:57 pm thanks for reading so that's it then, the curtain has come down on the 2012-13 football league season. well done to all those teams who won promotion and commiserations to those who were relegated. see you in august. joe may 28, 2013 | permalink | comments (0) share this article: facebook twitter google+ messenger linkedin digg it newsvine fark nowpublic reddit 24 may 2013 5:43 pm championship season review: cardiff run away with it as wolves drop again monday's play-off final at wembley between watford and crystal palace will bring down the curtain on the 2012-13 championship season. one of those two sides will join cardiff and hull in the premier league next season, while peterborough, wolves and bristol city were all relegated to league one. here, former birmingham and derby defender michael johnson looks back on the last nine months and picks out the teams, managers and players who have impressed him the most... champagne moment: cardiff celebrate winning the championship title managers of the season malky mackay is an obvious choice but he really has done a fine job at cardiff. i like how he has gradually improved the side over the two years he has been there and brought in his philosophy to the club. the owners have given him time as well which is key, and now they are reaping the rewards. for david flitcroft to keep barnsley in the league considering where they were when he took over is a massive achievement. hopefully he can reassess the situation over the summer, get one or two players in and make barnsley a more prominent force in the division. i know people have got their thoughts on the loan system but gianfranco zola has used that brilliantly at watford. he has got some terrific players in, some previously unknown talent in nathaniel chalobah and matej vydra. they are one step away from the top flight and the brand of football he has brought into the football club, with the formation and the fluidity, i think has been a breath of fresh air for this league. italian job: gianfranco zola has guided watford to the play-off final players of the season you have got to look at glenn murray . to score the 30 goals that he has scored - you can't look much further than that. his team-mate at crystal palace wilfried zaha deserves a mention too. to perform to a level to be recognised by england in the championship and to earn a move to manchester united is no mean feat. craig bellamy has had a terrific season too. to regain the hunger from dropping down into the championship from a premier league club and help cardiff to the title i think is a testimony to his professionalism. red devil: zaha will join man united at the end of the season teams of the season for cardiff to maintain the standard they have since september in such an unpredictable league makes them worthy winners of the league. you're looking at six or seven months there where they have been fully focused, determined and players have come in where there have been injuries and held the fort. that speaks volumes for the manager to keep them going. not just the starting xi but the whole squad. everybody would have had an important part to play in cardiff's season. that's down to the manager who is keeping them hungry and keeping his players there. easy does it: malky mackay's cardiff won the title by eight points it was so tight this season that there are teams who were bobbing along near the bottom all year that have ended up finishing quite high in the table, and visa versa. i think all those teams who have stayed up deserve a pat on the back because you look at the teams who have gone down and there is some real quality there - and the highest number of points to go down in peterborough. just ask wolves what an achievement it is to stay up. next season you can't look any further than qpr with the resources that they have got and the manager that they have got. only 18 months ago harry redknapp was being talked about for the england job. if they can keep some of those international players and add to that some hungry young players then you can't look much further than them. rebuilding: harry redknapp will be looking to bounce straight back with qpr wigan too, they are fa cup holders and with some of the players they have got there and the structure in place at the club they should be able to bounce back. i think reading will find it a bit tougher but the three teams coming down are definitely in a far stronger state than bolton, blackburn and wolves were last year. i think nottingham forest will throw money at it. bolton and leicester will be determined to bounce back and get in that top six again. out of the three coming up i think bournemouth are the team you would expect to fare the best. the home form of yeovil and bournemouth will be so important. they are small grounds and far distances to travel so teams won't like that. they have got to take advantage of that and intimidate teams. doncaster i think will struggle. tweet your thoughts to @jonsarno and you can visit jonno's official website at www.michaeljohnsonfootball.com michael johnson was speaking to joe ridge ( @joeridge87 ) may 24, 2013 | permalink | comments (0) share this article: facebook twitter google+ messenger linkedin digg it newsvine fark nowpublic reddit 17 may 2013 6:44 pm league one season review: bournemouth's remarkable comeback dominates the headlines this sunday's play-off final at wembley between brentford and yeovil will bring down the curtain on the 2012-13 league one season. one of those two sides will join doncaster and bournemouth in the championship next season, while scunthorpe, bury, portsmouth and hartlepool were all relegated to league two. here, former birmingham and derby defender michael johnson looks back on the last nine months and picks out the teams, managers and players who have impressed him the most... last-day drama: doncaster celebrate winning the title at brentford team of the season league one was such a tight league this year. for a while i think there were nine or 10 teams separated by a couple of wins in the top half. there were some really big teams in there with the likes of coventry, sheffield united and portsmouth but none of them had good seasons. i thought brentford were terrific and had a really good go this year. uwe rosler has turned round an unfashionable club into a club that's now firmly on the map. people know about brentford and what they're capable of now. wembley date: brentford meet yeovil in the play-off final manager of the season for punching above their weight you can't look any further than bournemouth. when eddie howe went in there bournemouth were nowhere near the play-offs, let alone an automatic spot. but they steamrollered their way to the top and into the championship, which is great testament to eddie and his staff. it looked a real bad career move when eddie left burnley for bournemouth but he has proved everybody wrong. something about him and that club just gel and he now has the chance to manage them in the championship. howe's that? the bournemouth boss turned things around at dean court player of the season matt ritchie has a great left foot and great talent. paolo di canio played him on the right hand side at swindon cutting in where he was lethal. he can score goals from dead ball situations and coming in off the flanks and he helped played a big part in bournemouth's end-of-season run after joining them in january. the boy jamie paterson at walsall as well was brilliant. he looks the part, he's lively, he wants to get on the ball and run at people and i think he is one that can go on to play at a higher level. alan judge at notts county i like the look of too. he's a player that can travel 40, 50 yards with the ball at his feet and can hit shots with both left foot and right foot. next season sheffield united have got to deliver next season. three years in league one is not good enough for a club of that size. they were des
